BACKGROUND:

The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is holding a one-day Ecosystem Research Workshop on Wednesday, February 7th in conjunction with the Council’s February Council meeting. The workshop agenda, schedule, and other materials are available at https://www.npfmc.org/ecosystem-research-workshop/.

The goals of the workshop are twofold:

1.                     Provide the Council and stakeholders with an overview of current scientific efforts to understand the impacts of climate change on the BSAI, GOA, and Arctic ecosystems, fisheries, communities, and subsistence lifestyles, and the robustness of the management framework with respect to long-term environmental shifts.

2.                     Provide an opportunity for Council members, scientific and industry advisors, and stakeholders to discuss how the Council community can stay informed of and provide input into scientific efforts, and to consider how this knowledge can be incorporated into Council processes (e.g., Bering Sea FEP, others).

During this agenda item, the Council will receive a preliminary report from one of the workshop facilitators, Katie Latinich of the Fisheries Leadership and Sustainability Forum. She will provide a summary of workshop discussions, during which the Council may consider next steps. A more comprehensive workshop summary will be available in late spring 2018.
