BACKGROUND:
The Council’s Electronic Monitoring Workgroup (EMWG) met on May 15, 2018, in Seattle. The EMWG met in two sections, one for the original fixed gear EMWG and one for the newly formed trawl EMWG. Reports for each section are attached.
During the morning, members of the fixed gear EMWG received updates about program funding and 2018 EM implementation, before discussing continued progress on EM in the pot fleet. The group discussed lessons learned and composed a list of fixed gear EM issues for the OAC to track now that fixed gear EM is transitioning from the Workgroup to the OAC. This was the final meeting of the fixed gear EMWG.
During the afternoon, members of the trawl EMWG received five presentations about the EMWG cooperative approach and ongoing EM work relevant to trawl, before discussing funding opportunities and potential trawl monitoring objectives. The trawl EMWG is looking for Council feedback on their first draft of monitoring objectives. With Council approval, the trawl EMWG will meet over the summer to begin composing a workplan.
